Each fabric has its own personality and specific needs. To keep your sofa, armchair or garden furniture looking like new for as long as possible, here are the right steps to take depending on the material.
🐑 1. Bouclé (Sheepskin Fabric)
Trendy and warm, bouclé is characterised by its irregular texture.
The challenge : Its textured surface tends to trap crumbs, dust and animal hair.
Regular maintenance : Vacuum regularly (at least once a week) with a soft brush attachment to remove dust trapped between the loops.
In case of stains :
- Do not rub ! This could flatten the loops and create a "felted" area.
- Immediately blot the liquid with absorbent paper.
- Use a damp cloth with a little neutral soap (such as Marseille soap) and dab the area.
✨ 2. Velvet
Soft and luminous, velvet is a cut pile fabric that changes shade depending on the light.
The "marking" phenomenon : It is normal for velvet to mark (a "reflection" or crushing effect) when you sit down or place an object on it. This is not a defect.
- Regular care : Vacuum with a soft brush to avoid scratching the fabric.
- To restore volume to crushed pile : use a soft fabric brush or a steam iron (without touching the fabric with the hot soleplate!). The steam helps the pile to straighten.
- In case of stains : Velvet does not like excess water (risk of rings). Clean the stain by dabbing, then dry quickly with a hairdryer (cold/warm air) while brushing the pile in the right direction.
🛋️ 3. Synthetic/Polyester Fabric (The Versatile One)
Used for our standard indoor sofas and outdoor cushions.
- Advantages : Resistant, durable and often easier to live with.
- Regular maintenance : Dust with a vacuum cleaner (medium power).
- In case of stains : Most stains can be removed with a damp cloth and a little upholstery shampoo.
- Pilling : As with a woollen jumper, small bobbles may appear with friction (jeans, throws). This is normal. A simple lint shaver can be used to remove them easily.
☀️ 4. Outdoor Special : Outdoor Fabrics (Polyester, Olefin)
Our garden cushions are treated to withstand outdoor conditions, but they are not invincible.
- Water-repellent ≠ Waterproof : Our fabrics are treated to be water-repellent (water slides off them). However, in heavy rain or standing water, the water will eventually penetrate. Bring your cushions inside in case of rain!
- Sun (UV) : Even with UV protection, all fabrics will eventually fade if exposed to constant sunlight (including moonlight). Store them in a box when not in use.
- Washing : if removable: Always check the label inside. Hand wash or machine wash on a cold cycle (30°C max, low spin) to avoid damaging the fibres or the water-repellent treatment.
Never tumble dry! This will cause the covers to shrink (and you will not be able to put them back on).
⚠️ The 3 Golden Rules for all fabrics
Always test your cleaning product on a hidden area (back or underside of the sofa) before applying it to a visible stain.
- Avoid direct heat sources : Do not place your furniture too close to a radiator or fireplace, as this will dry out the fibres and alter the colours.
- Act quickly : A fresh stain is 10 times easier to remove than a dry stain.
